The game was never in doubt as the JNT offence put on their finest display of the tournament. NIPIGON, ONTARIO, July 29, 2010 – Parks Canada is pleased to have five local students stationed in tourist information centres along the north shore this summer helping to promote the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area.
Charmaine Beaulieu, Visitor Information Student Supervisor, works out of the Parks Canada office on the ground floor of Nipigon’s Tourist Information Centre. The four Student Visitor Information Officers are working out of the visitor and tourist information centres in the communities of Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Nipigon, and one is working at the Terry Fox Lookout and the Thunder Bay Pagoda. read more.....> read more ... |

THUNDER BAY, ON ----- July 31, 2010 --- Pitcher Lo Kuo Hua threw a complete game 3-hitter as the Junior National Team lost the semi-final game of the World Junior Baseball Championship to Chinese Taipei 3-1. The JNT will play for the Bronze Medal against Cuba who earlier in the day was upset by Australia in other semi-final by a score of 2-1.
The JNT had their best chance to make a comeback in the game in the 8th inning when they were down by 2 runs. Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, BC) hit a double off the wall in right field and that was followed by a Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) walk giving the JNT 2 runners on with nobody out. read more ... |

THUNDER BAY, ON ---- July 31, 2010 ---- Baseball has taken over the city in recent weeks. While there are several events going on this article is about the provincial Little League Championships, hosted by the Current River Little League at Thunder Bay’s Waddington Park.
By design or perhaps by accident, our city has some of the best baseball facilities. Waddington Park has five diamonds alone, and the new washroom facilities will be ready about a week after the tournament is done. What makes this all work is the community spirit of the city’s various neighbourhoods and the volunteers, who come out and officiate, man the concessions and do the organizing. USA improves to 6-1 in 2010 IBAF World Junior “AAA” (18U) Baseball Championships with the victory.
John Simms (The Woodlands, Tex.) pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, on just two hits with six strikeouts. THUNDER BAY, ON ---- July 31, 2010 ---– The Thunder Bay Chill needed extra time to defeat the Michigan Bucks, but two goals from striker Brandon Swartzendruber ensures the Chill will be taking part in the 2010 Premier Development League (PDL) Championship weekend.
In what was a very physical match, each team entered the half with several cautions but no goals. After trading several scoring chances in the second half, the Bucks Kenny Uzoigwe scored in the 79th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead. The goal brought the Chill to life, and it did not take the home side long to equalize. Zetroy Robertson headed a pass to Swartzendruber who turned and shot, tying the game in the 83rd minute. Regulation time ended, and the two teams would be going to extra time in front of a nervous Chapples Park crowd. read more ... |

THUNDER BAY, Canada –-Cuba edged the USA Baseball 18U National Team 3-2 Friday afternoon in front of more than 3000 fans at Port Arthur Stadium. USA falls to 5-1 in 2010 IBAF World Junior “AAA” (18U) Baseball Championships and is eliminated from medal contention.
A.J. Vanegas (Alameda, Calif.) tossed eight innings allowing two runs on five hits with a team-best 13 strikeouts. Vanegas’ 13 punch-outs ranks second all-time in U.S. history, just two shy of the record 15.
Phillip Pfeifer (Knoxville, Tenn.) suffers the loss allowing the go-ahead run in the final frame. The two U.S. hurlers combined to strike out a team-best 15 batters Friday. read more......> read more ... |

Team Canada, 5-1, will face the Chinese Taipei at 7:00 pm at Port Arthur Stadium after defeating Italy 11-1 in Quarter-Final action Friday night. Chinese Taipei, also 5-1, advances after defeating the Netherlands 4-2 at Baseball Central Friday afternoon. The other semi-final matchup features Cuba, 4-2, against Australia, also 4-2, at 2:00 pm at Port Arthur Stadium. DULUTH, MN ---- July 30, 2010 --– The end of the crippling dredging crisis on the Great Lakes moved a giant step closer today when a key House committee approved legislation requiring the federal government to spend all the tax dollars it collects for dredging on dredging rather than use nearly half to balance the budget - at least on paper.
Section 2007 of H.R. 5892, the Water Resources Development Act of 2010, mandates that all tax revenues annually deposited in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (“HMTF”) be used to dredge the nation’s deep-draft ports and waterways. THUNDER BAY, ON ----- July 29, 2010 ----- After trailing the Czech Republic the entire game, the Junior National Team clinched first place in their pool when Dalton Pompey (Mississauga, ON) who started the game on the bench, hit a 2-0 fastball over the left fielder's head to score Philip Diedrick (Ajax, ON) and Jalen Harris (Toronto, ON) giving the JNT an 8-7 win.

THUNDER BAY, Canada -- July 28, 2010 --- Daniel Camarena (Bonita, Calif.) tossed five shutout innings to propel USA Baseball 18U National Team over France 16-0 Wednesday morning. USA posted team-best five home runs to improve to 5-0 in the 2010 IBAF World Junior "AAA" (18U) Baseball Championships.
Camarena (1-0) rendered just two hits in five shutout frames. The left-hander struck out four and did not issue a walk.

HERON BAY, ONTARIO, ---- July 26, 2010 --– Mike Link and Kate Crowley, a retired couple from Duluth, Minnesota, are hiking around Lake Superior this summer to raise awareness and appreciation of the largest freshwater lake in the world. On Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 7 pm a presentation about their journey and experiences so far will be made at the Visitor Centre in Pukaskwa National Park.
Lake Superior’s shoreline stretches across more than 2575 kilometres (1600 miles). Kate and Mike, along with their support team, have traveled more than halfway around this majestic body of water. Last Thursday, July 22nd, they stepped into a voyageur canoe at the mouth of the Michipicoten River to paddle to Hattie Cove in Pukaskwa National Park. Michael Lorenzen (Anaheim, Calif.) led Team USA with a pair of hits and RBI, improving the U.S. to 1-0 in pool play.

THUNDER BAY, ON –--- July 25, 2010 --- Despite out shooting their opponents twenty to five, the Thunder Bay Chill (12-2-2) lost their final game of the regular season 2-1, to the Rochester Thunder (10-3-3).
Rochester took the lead in the 41st minute, when midfielder Chris Andre scored for the visitors. The Chill equalized in the 54th minute, courtesy of Brandon Swartzendruber. With the strike, Swartzendruber is tied for the league lead in goals with fourteen. THUNDER BAY, ON ---- July 21, 2010 ----- Residents of a Summer Cottage community just east of Thunder Bay are very upset about the MNR being unable to rescue a young bear with a plastic jar lodged on the head.
Last week the bear was spotted on highway 11 17 about 30 km east of Thunder Bay. Workmen doing highway construction work tried to remove the jar from the bear head unsuccessfully. An erosion control project, about to get underway on the McIntyre River, will include an innovative habitat enhancement component.
The McIntyre River, near Central Avenue and Riverside Drive, suffered significant erosion following a major storm in June, 2008. The on-going erosion will eventually threaten the stability of Riverside Drive; therefore, measures to slow the deterioration of the riverbank are being undertaken by the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA). read more ......> read more ... |

THUNDER BAY ON --- July 20, 2010 -- A 4,600-year-old burial has been discovered in a remote corner of northern Ontario Canada – and could hold the key to how ancient Canadians lived. The remarkable find has been made at the mouth of the Bug River, near Big Trout Lake, Ontario. Today the region is home to the Kitchenuhmaykoosik Inninuwug First Nation, an indigenous tribe numbering around 1,200.
The discovery was made by First Nation fishermen as water levels fell at the lake, exposing the burial. The site is currently being handled by an archaeological team from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay. Marie Canal National Historic Site on July 27th is sure to raise some eyebrows – and paddles – as the costumed paddlers plan to salute spectators watching their arrival.
Activities will commence on July 27th at 1pm with the David Thompson Brigade scheduled to land between 4 pm and 5 pm. The voyageurs will meet with visitors and present an historical talk, then will set up their camp and welcome new paddlers joining their expedition to Montreal. Saint Paul MN - July 17, 2010 --- For the third time in four games the JNT was forced to sit through a delay. This time the game had started as scheduled but lightning forced a stoppage that last for 40 minutes. The short break in action was not a factor as the JNT prevailed with a 7-4 victory against the Twin City High School All Stars.
Jesen Dygestile-Therrien (Montreal, QC) got his second start of the pre-world's tour and looked dominant through three innings. Therrien would have continued to pitch in the game but the delay caused by the lightning ended Therrien's afternoon pre-maturely. THUNDER BAY, ON ----- July 18, 2010 ---- Angioplasty Suite Renovation and Patient Short Stay Expansion From 7:30 a.m., Monday, July 19, 2010, to 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre will close the Labour & Delivery driveway and entrance to all traffic due to the Angioplasty construction project.
During the Labour and Delivery entrance closure, all obstetrical patients are asked to enter the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre via the Emergency Department. THUNDER BAY, ON ---- July 17, 2010 ---- According to the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists website, prior to the 1960's, the Peregrine Falcon, Falco peregrinus anatum, was a summer breeding resident of Lake Superior's north shore. This continental subspecies vanished from their rocky eyries, primarily as the result of man's use of agricultural pesticides (DDT and its metabolites) in the environment.
In 1973, the Canadian Wildlife Service and the University of Saskatchewan initiated the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Program. In 1989, the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists, with support from the Ministry of Natural Resources, launched Project Peregrine in an attempt to reintroduce this species to the Superior north shore. read more....> read more ... |

Thunder Bay, ON – July 17, 2010 ---- The Thunder Bay Chill's missed chances came back to haunt them, as their sixth game win streak ended Saturday night with a 1-1 draw against the Real Colorado Foxes. The Chapples Park crowd witnessed a Chill team come out flat, and go down a goal in the first half, as Mike Martin latched on to a Josh Fallin pass in the 22nd minute to put the Foxes up 1-0.
In the second half, the Chill carried most of the offense, led by Brandon Swartzendruber who missed countless chances to even the score line. THUNDER BAY, ON ----- July 12, 2010 For the second time this year, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has received laboratory confirmation that a deer tick found locally has tested positive for Lyme disease. While the first positive deer tick was found on a dog, this latest tick was found on a human who picked up the tick within the city limits. Fort Frances, Ont. -July 12, 2010 ---- Abitibi Consolidated Company of Canada, owner and operator of a paper mill in Fort Frances, was fined $125,000 on July 9, 2010, for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that caused injuries to two workers and a student.
On August 20, 2008, two electricians at the paper mill were changing the power box for part of a paper machine. The power to the box was locked out. The power to the cabinet containing the box was not shut off or locked out. As the electricians removed the power box, they noticed a cable inside the cabinet that needed to be moved. One of them reached into the cabinet with a tool to remove a clamp holding the cable in place. The tool made electrical contact with a live conductor inside the cabinet and this created an arc flash. This caused another arc flash from the live conductors overhead. read more......> read more ... |
