As David Suzuki stated in a Science Matter, article co-operation between nations to protect birds is effective. With proven success stories like the European Union Council Bird Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, bird travel does not stop at the nearest border and conservation of bird populations is more effective over large geographical areas.
We know that birds regularly travel down the Sibley Peninsula across Lake Superior to the Keweenaw Peninsula and along the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota.
Bird watchers are encouraged to enter the birds they see into our online database. This database will also allow website visitors to conduct searches to see the birds that have been entered, where the birds were spotted and the date the birds were seen.
We encourage all residents of the Lake Superior Basin to take part in this fun and rewarding project. Make it part of your daily routine to list the birds you have seen! All you need to do is go to the Trout Lake Learning Center’s website www.tllc.ca and click on the bird logo on the front page to submit the bird you have seen. At the same time you will be able to view the birds your friends and neighbours around Lake Superior have added to the website.
The Trout Lake Learning Center’s mission as a non-profit corporation, is to protect, preserve and enhance the biodiversity and natural environment as well as to research, collect and disseminate information to the general public.
The success of our programs are dependant on the public’s support. The results of the Bird Survey will be discussed at a public meeting at the Trout Lake Learning Center on Saturday May 10, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
