Not what it appears to be.

THUNDER BAY, ON ~ March 11, 2008 ~  It appears that our story and photo on the 1000 pound sturgeon was not what it appeared to be.  Mike wrote us stating that " I have had this image forwarded to me numerous times over the last three years.  I doubt this is a lake sturgeon from Lake Erie.  The fish in the photo is likely a white sturgeon which is native to the west coast (ie. Squeers Lake Fishery Research

Once again the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), Northwest Science and Information Branch is holding its Squeers Lake Winter Fishery. This will be the 24th year for this annual event.

 The purpose of this study is to determine the allowable harvest of lake trout from plankton feeding lake trout communities like Squeers Lake. Approximately 40 % of the lake trout lakes in Ontario represent this community type, therefore making this research extremely valuable for provincial management of coldwater fish communities   read more.....>

 

 Trout Lake Learning CenterTrout Lake Learning Center announce Study

Sunday, 28 October 2007 The Trout Lake Learning Centre has announced two new initiatives. JP Fraser states, "We have received funding to hire an intern to do McIntyre Superior Rainbow Study The goal of the study is to enhance to overall environmental quality of the McIntyre River system, including the protection and development of urban fisheries by discovering the cause of the decline in the numbers of rainbow trout returning to Trout Lake via the McIntyre River to spawn".

Reg's Changes for Lake Nipigon
